Albers was a pioneer in the systematic exploration of how our perception of colors is influenced by surrounding colors. The original edition of his classic work included numerous prints to illustrate the ways in which colors interact. The previous paperback edition included only a few of these prints; this edition includes more of these prints and so gives the reader more insight into a fascinating subject. The work is of interest not only to painters and printmakers but also to photographers and to anyone who is interested in how we perceive the world around us.Product details

Interaction of Color Josef Albers 9780300116175 Books Reviews
Not quite what I expected, this is a course in book form! Wish this was required coursework when I took color and design! This book demands engagement on several levels as well as a side investment of time and materials. It is not simply a read from a great mind, it will engage your perception.
The book arrived in excellent condition and is a must have for any painter or artist in general. I bought it for my drawing in color class and its really helped expand my sense of color relations and effects. However, this book doesn't come with all the color plates, which I'm bummed about. You can make your own if you want using Color Aid or the Apple app.
I bought this book after a lecture given at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts on color in quilts give by Gerald Roy. He then led us though the collection with comments on color combinations. The book gave me an appreciation of color use that I had not appreciated before and gave me many ideas for future quilt combinations. It also helped my appreciation of what many modern artists are doing in some of their paintings. In each of the sections of the quilt exhibit there is a modern painting which exhibits similar color effects as seen in the quilts. You have to concentrate when reading the book but it is fascinating information.
I made a mistake. I had a full digital version of Albers book, and I wanted a print copy. This functions as a minor text to that digital issue, but is not as fleshed out as I had hoped. If I want the full print version, I will have to shell out the big bucks to include the full text and color plates. It would be worth it though.
You get what you pay for, I guess. My comments are not about the content of this book, but about the presentation of the content in this book itself. I bought this book to give to a friend, but I scanned through it before I did so. The text is small and oddly justified - leaving many pages less than half filled with text. Also, and maybe I am missing something, but, for a book about the interaction of color, there isn't much color to be found in this book.
There are more expensive and larger-format versions of this book available. Maybe those are executed well enough to do justice to the content?
This “textbook” and the professor who conducted my sophomore introduction to color theory course by assigning the exercises that Albers created has, frankly, enriched my life on this planet. If you are blessed with any sight all, buy it and enter the magic. My experience was almost 45 years ago and I am still conscious and appreciative in both my artistic and daily life of the lessons learned.
This volume is a modern reprint of the classic Interaction of Color that now resides most often in rare book collections. The reproductions are reasonably accurate. I use it in teaching color theory at the university. Along with some of the Itten's work, these two are still the best for color theory instruction. It is not a hobbyist approach, so lightweight students may find it too scientific, but for those interested in the meat of color theory, this is a good starting place. It does not cover additive light structures or RGB media, but it was designed for painters, so it is what one would expect. Love it, and the photos of art works make a nice application of examples to the principles.
